It is said that in 776 B.C. the ancient Greeks served cheesecake to the athletes as an energy food for the first Olympic Games. So, it's a good choice for your Olympic and even your Super Bowl parties. Although the nutritional content varies, it is not unusual to see six grams of protein per slice. By comparison, a slice of Boston cream pie contains only two grams of protein per serving. In time the Romans defeated the Greeks and over the centuries continued their conquest of Europe and the British Isles spreading their culture which included the cheesecake. The Italian style is based on the old Roman cheesecakes, which called for the use of honey, ricotta, flour and bay leaves. The modern recipes uses sugar instead of honey, omit the bay leaves and add vanilla extract for flavoring. However, our 100 year old traditional family recipe from Bari, combines a delightful combination of spices, and other secret ingredients which gives our cheesecake it's unique flavor. |
